Egzystencja człowieka i jego przemijanie w twórczości Stanisława Lenartowicza

The authors of critical and filmological texts on Stanisław Lenartowicz’s works quite often cite his utterance: “Film is always made for the audience and not for the author’s own pleasure and I always obeyed the rule”. It is, however, worth reminding that Lenartowicz was strongly convinced as to the force of cinema as art. He wrote that film camera “is the most perfect microscope which — when it is focused well — can approximate to us the world, can widen our knowledge about it”. So I want to look at the work by Lenartowicz as a group of art pieces disguised in genre costume, but consisting of important content being a sum of the creator’s reflections about the world and human existence in it. In the movies by Lenartowicz the existence looks rather accidental, and the world is not too friendly. Additionally, there is something in a human being that never allows him/her to be pleased with the status quo. Desire of something new leads to a disappointment but it is also a condition of change that can lead a man to the acceptance of fate and to the opening for the “new”. Lenartowicz’s films emanate with force of existential questions, doubts and the force of seeking peace, consisting of a quite high dose of sense of humor.
