Abstract

FROM A SHORT STORY THROUGH A FILM TO A NOVEL: HONDO BY LOUIS L’AMOUR AND JOHN FARROW

Łukasz A. Plesnar describes probably the only case of a double (or two-way) adaptation on the history of literature and film. The short story The Gift of Cochise written by Louis L’Amour and published in the July issue of “Collier’s Weekly,” was transformed into the screenplay by Edward Grant. He modified the original plot and entitled it Hondo. Then, John Farrow directed the movie based on the screenplay. L’Amour was so impressed by the movie that he decided to write a novel Hondo including the modifications made by Grant. It became one of the most popular novels in the output of the author.
